Why Healthcare Organizations Are Launching Innovation Centers

A hospital in San Diego is using artificial intelligence to help doctors more quickly identify patients at risk of sepsis, the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

Dr. Christopher Longhurst, executive director of UC San Diego Health's Jacobs Center for Health Innovation, says the hospital has been using an AI tool on Amazon Web Services to help doctors identify patients at high risk of sepsis, which can lead to life-threatening infections.

It's one of several projects being tested at the center, which opened in April and is the first of its kind in the US, per the Union-Tribune.

Other projects include using AI to transcribe patient notes and to predict which patients are likely to develop sepsis.

The center's biggest project so far is the development of an AI tool to assist physicians with sepsis questions and off-the-shelf software that automatically transcribes patient notes.

"It's not just the algorithmit's the hard work of creating the clinical workflow and integrating processes and people to get the outcomes matter to our patients and the families we serve," Longhurst says. Read the Entire Article
