That's Conservation International's take on what it calls the "colossal challenge" of protecting the Amazon rainforest from the effects of climate change while also storing enough carbon to keep the planet from warming to 3.6 degrees over pre-industrial levels, per the Guardian.
That's why Conservation International and France's Facility for Global Environment are announcing a $3.2 million investment in "key areas containing Irrecoverable Carbon stores and high biodiversity in diverse ecosystems like forests, mangroves, and peatlands," per a press release.
"These reserves are pivotal in mitigating the most dramatic effects of climate change," St.phane Cieniewski, senior adviser on environment and climate at France's Treasury, says.
The goal of the "Our Future Forests-Amazonia Verde" project is to protect 235 million tons of Irrecoverable Carbon in protected areas and indigenous communities in Bolivia, Ecuador, Guyana, and Peru, per the Guardian.
